Creating an email list for import into MailChimp?
First, you'll want to make it your goal to have only one list with different segments. That way, a contact can be exclusive or be shared among target categories AND your MailChimp costs can be a lot less expensive when you have many lists that share the same contact.
We like to use Google Spreadsheets – all you need is a gmail account – to organize and collaborate on lists like this. You can have multiple people adding and managing the list as a single database.
Below is an example of a simple set up where you include a first and last name for potential personalization and then a segment category for targeted email campaigns.
Create several key customer segments and then add a segment or multiple segments, separated by commas to place a contact in multiple.
Once this list is ready, you can import directly into MailChimp and then set up segments. After you've imported, you can always re-import later and add more contacts without disturbing existing contacts (like those who've opted out for example).
