Develop questions around client supplied topics and any deep and interesting question the interviewee can appreciate the question (think Sean Evans ‘Hot Ones’).

Get as close as possible to your interviewee
Smile (with your eyes) and listen, listen, listen
“Look at me!” — tell your person to look and talk to you, not the phone/camera — make them forget there’s a phone recording them
Glance occasionally at your phone — keep them centered with a little space above their heads
Dig for stories — be curious

A line of 10 middle school students stepped up for interviews and nearly every one was real, heartfelt and likely one of the strongest advertisements for their program. There was a large fan behind them which Descript removed which enabled us to interview them where they were most comfortable and supplied a good visual backdrop.
