The most authentic and lean interview style I’ve ever experienced

I’m rebuilding a website for Indianapolis Public Schools and I said we have to create TikToks of your coolest teachers!

I needed to test the concept so I asked one of my best friends and teacher, Dennis Piron from Batavia High School to help. He wrangled in his daughter Alex who just started teaching there last year and here’s what we did.

I plugged in this wireless audio system into my phone — clipped a mic onto Alex and the other on myself and then we walked and shot the interview. I simultaneously filmed with this 360 video camera and I got some amazing stories in just 4 minutes and 25 seconds.

I then edited it in Kapwing — a web based video editing tool – so no software needed.

IPS loved it and I just got back from Indy after filming 9 teachers at 3 different schools and it rocked!

With this template they’ll be able to capture a lot more stories like this, on their own, at a fraction of the cost and with an authenticity that’s unmatched.

Two of the interviews

Here’s an interview using these mics. I used my iPhone 12 for the direct video and audio (connected with the Lewinner mics) and was also filming from above with an Insta360 video camera.

The consistent level of these mics is what makes it — the only issue was one point she grabbed her collar during the interview and you can hear how it affected the sound.

This was another inview like above but what I learned was at one point, we came across some students and wanted to incorporate them into the interview. I added subtitles to accommodate for the distant sound quality. What I would have done was pull my mic off and point it towards these kids for this moment of interactions.
