This new wireless microphone system that plugs directly into an iPhone is what I’ve looking for for years!

At $119 dollars it’s also the most economically priced compared to the Picomic I had been using the past several years, which runs $359 and requires an additional recording device — I had been using a Zoom recorder.

There are a lot of new options like the Lewinner mic system but what I liked most about Lewinner is the charging case that charges both mics and the receiver. Other versions don’t come with the case and requires you charge the units independently.

The other feature I like is there is no bluetooth pairing. You just plug in the receiver and that’s it. *Note, that if you have a phone case on, you’ll need to get an extender so that it can fully plug in. My first tests required that I take my phone case off.

Buy the Lewinner 2 Pack Wireless Lavalier Microphones for iPhone from Amazon.

Don’t forget to buy the Lightning Extender Adapter if you have a phone case.

Tips

Watch the videos below and not the following:

  • Best to place the mic in the center and not on one collar or the other as I found that when walking with the subject, if their head was turned towards me away from the mic on the opposite collar, the level was a bit lower than I would have liked

  • Remember if you are interviewing someone and another person jumps into the mix, pull the mic off and point it towards the other people talking.

Actual Videos

Here’s an interview using these mics. I used my iPhone 12 for the direct video and audio (connected with the Lewinner mics) and was also filming from above with an Insta360 video camera.

The consistent level of these mics is what makes it — the only issue was one point she grabbed her collar during the interview and you can hear how it affected the sound.

This was another inview like above but what I learned was at one point, we came across some students and wanted to incorporate them into the interview. I added subtitles to accommodate for the distant sound quality. What I would have done was pull my mic off and point it towards these kids for this moment of interactions.
